A laid-back resort
Resort-wise, Playa de la Arena is a bit of a quiet customer on the west coast of Tenerife. It doesn’t party hard like full-throttle Playa de Las Americas, 30 kilometres away – and, frankly, that’s the appeal. You get all the bars and restaurants you need without the non-stop pace. And with its craggy coastline and mountain views, the place looks pretty good, too.
Beach life
The small beach at Playa de la Arena comes with Tenerife’s trademark black sands. It’s also got a Blue Flag to its name, so it’s spotlessly clean. The water here gets deep quite quickly but lifeguards are on hand to keep an extra eye out. Further out to sea, watersports get a good look in. And when you need a snack, the flower-lined prom is stacked with bars and restaurants.
Easy-going nightlife
Playa de la Arena doesn’t overdo it at night. It’s the kind of place where you can relax over a meal at one of the seafront restaurants or settle into a cosy bar for an undisturbed drink. Of course, you can liven things up if you want to. The hotels have their own entertainment, and there are karaoke and quiz nights on offer, too.
Day trips to Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Just over an hour’s drive and you’re in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A good way to get round the place is on an open-top bus tour – they run every 25 minutes from La Plaza de Espana. Back on foot you might want to pop into the free Museo Municipal de Belles Artes then hit the boutique shops on Calle de la Castillo.
